ACCSS will become a collaborative model that brings otherwise separately functioning stakeholders together to support current students to become the qualified personnel necessary for today and the future’s workforce.

ACCSS partners have identified the following needs in order to increase students’ post-secondary completion:

  • student support and resources for academic and technical dual credit classes;
  • collaboration and sharing of resources;
  • partnerships with local schools and Blinn College to provide dual credit classes as a transition to university study and/or career preparation;
  • training for parents, students, and teachers;
  • student long range planning and support; and
  • personnel to support and monitor students’ post-secondary preparation.

ACCSS member school districts report that only 15% of high school students were enrolled in dual credit classes as of September 1, 2018. Out of the number of students enrolled in dual credit classes, only 14% were economically disadvantaged. To address the target audience of rural, low income students, ACCSS will provide:

  • time for partner schools to adjust schedules, align curriculum and provide training;
  • a multitude of dual credit courses and technical dual credit courses leading to certification and/or stackable credentials;
  • an ACCSS Director and Student Success Coach;
  • shared personnel resources as well as community college instructors for courses;
  • convenient location and flexible schedules for students;
  • on-going mentor support for students;
  • in depth study and exploration of careers at the middle school—beginning with 6th grade level—that includes career selection, career planning to meet the educational needs, and preparation to be able to enroll in dual credit courses and/or technical dual credit courses;
  • training for staff, students and parents; and
  • local partners to continue the project.

These activities will help create a cultural change where all students—with the focus on rural, low-income students—are prepared to take (and complete) dual credit classes, as well as stackable certifications and credentials that align to high demand careers.

What are the specific benefits to our school district? ACCSS will assist in eliminating financial, transportation, and support barriers for our students. ACCSS will provide resources, guidance, and support solidly preparing our students for university study or a career in a high demand field.
